Below are two images that caught my attention this evening. The first is Nick Turner’s image from http://www.artnotoil.org.uk/ which depicts the silhouette of a man holding a petrol pump to another man’s head emblazoned from behind by the BP logo. The second image is the Pulitzer prize winning photo of South Vietnamese General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong prisoner in Saigon, taken by Eddie Adams. A clear and excellent example of an iconic image being reinvented for today’s generation to make a point about current affairs. This is further emphasised by the subtle word play between executive and execution. However, where it loses impact is for those who know of the Vietnam conflict from computer games and films rather than journalism and history books.
