Dan’s 22nd Birthday

Last night saw a troop of geeks and nerds which ascended all swottish proportions. Happy Birthday Dan and thanks to everyone that turned up and made such an effort to be a geek or nerd. The photos are available here and the videos I took on the dance floor of 42s here.

Also of note, it seems Dan is in his spare time the geeky virgin from skins and Ashleigh in hers is a 12 foot tall netball player…

DJing on the Twisted Folk Stage @ Pangaea

This Saturday 27th I’ll be laying down a few beats in between the sets of the bands playing on the Twisted Folk stage [facebook link] at Manchester Uni’s exclusive Pangaea event.

Simon Borkin [past Andrew Jackson Show guest] who is organising the stage says it best:

As part of the Pangaea post exam-extravaganza, the Twisted Folk stage plays host to a dazzling array of acts providing folky flavours and psychedelic sounds to sweep you away…

With headline act The Answering Machine, we can also boast performances from Gideon Conn, Buttonhead, Beepseals, The Petty Thief, Pablo’s Finest Hour, Isobel Hayworth and much more…

Plus award winning Fuse FM DJ Andrew Jackson will be laying on the tunes between the acts…

Nestled behind the Solem Bar, be sure not to miss this hidden gem of a venue…

If you’re already attending Pangaea [facebook link] then I’ll see you there. If you’re not then WHY NOT?

…does this mean I can say I’ve DJ’d a gig with Mary Anne Hobbs?

Wanted!

Who is the person holding the video camera in the background? If you are this person or know them PLEASE GET IN CONTACT. Email me and hopefully we can arrange a way of getting what I am sure is legendary footage of a one off never to be matched again evening.

Don’t know what I’m on about? It was of course the infamous Chestnut Court Rave that took place on the very last day of halls at Oak House in 2005. Check out the pictures and the videos.

Student Radio Awards Official Photos

I got an email today from the nice people at the Student Radio Association telling me that the official photos were up… so I stole them.

…well stole, borrowed, leased, copied its difficult to tell these days.

The Eat Your Own Ears & Transgressive Roadshow

Last Friday saw The Warehouse Project play host to the Transgressive Records Roadshow, featuring Lady Fuzz, Battle, Larrikin Love, The Young Knives, The Subways and The Mystery Jets. And up to see it all for one night only was my Dad, Pete Jackson. Already famous for his epic films, production of Blue Peter and above all star appearance in Pete Jackson’s Band of the Week on the award winning Andrew Jackson Show. Accompanying him on his ‘trip up North’ were Simon ‘Middle Child’ Micklewright and Willy ‘Beanie Hat’ Weston.

Up first were Ladyfuzz a shouty screamy Scottish/Eastern European affair – yes I couldn’t tell which – who used their guitarists vocals for bass. They were closely followed in The Rig by Battle. Definitely a hit with the crowd, Battle delivered a well polished set which surely peaked with their track Tendency. It was good to see they haven’t been too hyped of late, the lead singer having to set the stage himself in order to prepare it for his distinctively shaped guitar.

Larrikin Love were on next in the main hall and it was a relatively smooth transition from one stage to the next without the hanging around seen at the Long Blondes/Longcut/Brakes gig. What amazes me is that people of my generation actually like Larrikin Love. I mean, I think they’re excellent; they blend it all in for me, reggae, ska, country, and folk are all elements apparent in their latest album The Freedom Spark. Add to that the street urchin ‘cardboard box’ look the lead singer carries and they’re probably the oddest outfit out there. Yet, despite they’re less popular influences the crowd went mental. Up at the front it was very festival-esque: it wasn’t so much jumping up and down as rubbing up the back of someone it was so packed, steam rose off of the crowd into the rafters of the warehouse, and there was the obligatory smell of beer, sweat and poppers. “If they liked that” remarked my Dad afterwards, “then you’d have thought they’d all love The Levellers.”

Before The Young Knives came on I managed to grab a few photos of everyone else that had come down including Harry [who just couldn't wait to ask Pete what his favourite band was this week], Cath, Sam, Cat, Vicky and her friend Kerry. The Young Knives put on a good show, still lots of sweat and beer down the front, but you weren’t quite sure how fast to rub.

However, the highlight of the night surely has to be The Subways. They were ferocious, and the crowd equally so. At several points The Subways lead singer Billy Lunn had to announce on behalf of the management that the crowd had to calm down, at which point he slagged of chart acoustic music and launched into another headthrashing number. In fact The Subways’ crowd won the once off but much acclaimed Pete Jackson’s Mosh Pit of the Week. “They had a good circle going on in there, I was almost tempted to join it myself,” Pete commented.

The most controversial point of the night, as shown in the picture below, came when Billy climbed the eight or so foot right speaker. However, instead of jumping back onto the stage as he had done on the previous two occasions, Billy poised to throw himself into the jubilant crowd below. What followed was an attempt by a grey hoodied member of management to stop Billy, who then jumped onto the stage and was half dragged to the opposite side and into the edges backstage. There was a brief scuffle before Billy returned to his guitar and announced down the microphone, “The stage manager is a c*nt, everyone say ‘the stage manager is a c*nt’”. The crowd did what they were told and the band launched into their next song with even more energy than they’d started the set with.

So as you can imagine after all that The Mystery Jets were a little bit slow. So we watched a few tracks and headed back. The night was rounded off by a kebab, a beer and a visit to the Mabfield house party which was still in full swing, and strangely enough smelt of beer, sweat and poppers.

All the photos from the night are now available.

Student Radio Awards 2006

Well, to not put too fine a point on it, I won. It wasn’t expected and I’m both flattered and surprised. Above all I see as a record of my achievement not so much the award itself [although I am of course well chuffed about that] but those who I was in competition with for it. Anyone who read my post on the nominations and heard what I was up against will realise that the competition was stiff and to have beaten it is a reward in itself.

As I mentioned in my acceptance speech I would like to thank station managers past and present – Minnie Stephenson and Philippa Morgan – for giving me the opportunity to be on the radio, Harry Garne for being on my show and being in almost half of my audio entry, and above all Dan Waters for being my loyal producer and co-host. I’d also like to apologise to Dan for calling him the ‘resident ginger’, it appears Jon Holmes isn’t the only one who should keep his jokes to the radio.

I’ve uploaded all my photos from the night to the uni section and the videos are on their way to the videos section – makes sense really. You can also hear the student radio awards [and me admittedly] get a mention on Jo Whiley’s entertainment news by downloading

. A few interesting things to hear out for on the video clips: myself being described as very Ricky Gervais which is as big as shock to me as to those who know me well, and when Chris Moyles starts to take a little too long on stage and says…

“Oh yes this is it. You know, being all serious now when you flick through the radio guide and it doesn’t matter where you live and you listen to all the good female DJs on Radio: Jo Whiley, being probably the best female DJ in the country in my opinion [applause]. You’ve got Edith Bowman of course now with her own show, [pause] so that’s how important this award is tonight. You know, there really is a shortage of decent females – there’s loads of shit ones, but there’s a shortage of decent female broadcasters [disconcerted cries from crowd turning into boos]. Oh hang on, hang on, I did, I did hear ‘fuck off Moyles’ was one [cheers], I did hear ‘show us your tits’, funny I didn’t hear anybody mention six hundred and fucking fifty grand a year so fuck off. [boos] Oh boo my arse!”

I’ll let you all make your own minds up on that one. Finally a big thanks to Jonny and Dominic from Leeds Uni Radio Station for keeping us Fuse boys and girls company.

The Long Blondes, The Longcut, Brakes and Uncle Bob @ The Warehouse Project

Last night I embarked on my final freebie of the week to The Warehouse Project to see The Long Blondes, The Longcut, Brakes and Uncle Bob [seen in revere order]. Unkle Bob were a bit out of place for the event, and they came out onto a very cold stage to a very small crowd. I think someone at the marketing dept for the warehouse project needs to have a rethink about putting unheard of bands on a Thursday night, at an unconventional location during reading week. I think they must have panicked and got XFM to give a shed load of tickets away. It was only Cat, Vanessa, Sam and I in attendance but we all had an extra three places on our guestlists each.

Brakes livened things up a bit with their short snappy shouty numbers; they’re an interesting accompaniment to The Killers latest tour. The Longcut were so much better last night than when I saw them with a dozen other people on the XFM stage at In The City. Their sound suits a larger venue and it also helped that they had a few fans along. You can see them performing their track Late Night Bus over at the videos section.

However, by the time The Longcut had finished it was around quarter past midnight, and I have to shamefully say I was knackered. Cat and I had arrived at 8:45 and had been on our feet since, so we were all a little frustrated to have to wait until 12:45am for The Long Blondes to make an appearance. They were good though, a little static at first but soon the lead singer got a bit of a sexy jive on and things warmed up.

You can see all the photos from the evening here as well as The Longcut video here. They should prove a taster for is to come at the Transgressive Records night on the 17th November where I’ll be seeing The Mystery Jets, The Young Knives, Larrikin Love, Battle, and The Noissettes.

In The City 2006

For those who are unaware and for those who don’t care I’ll inform you that the last few days in Manchester have played host to In The City. This is four nights of gigs which are held all around Manchester in venues you’ve probably never heard of or wouldn’t have expected to indulge in such indie shenanigans. One of these venues was 235 Live, which is the official name for what is effectively a posh sound proofed room in the back of a casino.

On Sunday night I was fortunate enough to attend 235 Live with my housemate Cat where we just missed Battle, but did get to see the excellent Little Man Tate and superb Larrikin Love. After bumping into Nicola, a friend from my work at Bar 38 this summer, who was working for the XFM street team at the event we decided to try and blag our way into last night’s gig as well. It wasn’t too difficult and we were rewarded with Ali Love, Vega4 and The Longcut – as well as ringing in my right ear even this morning.

A definite thumbs up to Little Man Tate and Larrikin Love, the latter of whom can be seen at the Transgressive Eat Your Own Ears night at The Warehouse Project along with Battle, The Noisettes, and The Mystery Jets. Of last nights bands Ali Love were funky but nothing special; The Longcut were good for the songs I knew but they managed to nearly empty the room with their performance; so I’d have to say the best band of the night were Vega4. Initially I accused them with the MOTR stick but after a solid performance I can definitely see the handsome, intense, Irish leadsinger sweeping them into the U2 end of the market.

And to round it all off XFM then offered us 4 free tickets each for The Warehouse Project on Thursday to see The Longcut, The Long Blondes, Brakes, Howling Bells and Mike Pickering. Of course you can find all of the photos on the uni section of the site.

Derby Meets Manchester

Last night saw the meeting of two worlds… Well it wasn’t that dramatic. I’ve uploaded the photos and videos from yesterday evenings debauchery. Tom, Wolfman, Sarah, Jennie, Serin and I started of at The Metropolitan in West Didsbury before catching a cab to Deansgate Locks where we lounged in Loaf, danced in Arq and mingled with all the beautiful people whilst sipping champagne [gracias senior Breese] in the Sugar Lounge VIP area.

I left, but the others soon followed, to see Fabio, Marcus Intalex and Calibre at Club Academy where I met Claudio and his mates Binno, Harry, Nadia and Sarah. I went pretty mental, was accused of being on pills again – but then that was hardly a surprise given the state of my t-shirt. It was a light grey t-shirt to start with, but after three hours of pretty much non-stop dancing it soon became a dark grey t-shirt; keep an eye out in the photos as my t-shirt gets progressively darker.

To finish it all off Claudio, Binno and I headed for the legendry Khans where Claudio indulged in some filthy ‘horse face meat’ donner, Binno had a garlic bread with cheese and mushrooms, and of course I engaged with an obligatory chip naan. You can catch it all in one of the videos that night.
