The Truly Penultimate Show

The Andrew Jackson Show is here for its penultimate show… for ever! But boy have we got a rammed show for you today [I don't know how we're going to fit it in]. This week’s topic as some of you may have heard at the end of last week’s show is man crushes. That form of endearment by one heterosexual male to another which goes beyond the normal amount of attentiveness one would consider of any other platonic relationship. As well as:

# A chat with a policeman. We’re not quite sure what about yet, possibly crime. Or maybe paedophiles.
# A chat with the people from People and Planet.
# In the studio live: PABLO’S FINEST HOUR
# Pete Jackson’s band of the week: has he been fooling more unwitting bands into thinking he is a famous A&R man?
# Dan’s intros: when will I ever beat the audience?
# The Battle Track: new this broadcast, we end each show with a classic track chosen by you!

Only one more after this. Aargh!

Getting Old: The Andrew Jackson Show

Well really this post should be The Andrew Jackson Show: Getting Old, but it could be seen either way, this is show 26 after all. That’s right, after the discovery of a triplet of grey hairs sprouting from my forehead this week I’m going to be talking about getting old, its virtues and vices. Although I should imagine its a lot more of the former.

Also coming up this week:

# Pete Jackson’s Band of the Week – where would you be without it?
# Battle Track – Dan and I face off with our battle tracks of the week. Text or email in to pledge your allegiance either way.
# Whisky Cats Exclusive – I preview the latest EP ‘Put Your Title Here’ from The Andrew Jackson Show guest alumni, see how far they’ve come in two years.
# Radio Hangman – a feature which could be a revolution in broadcasting or a complete flump [a soft squidgy sugar confectionery that comes in shades of white and pink].
# And music from The Holloways, The Wombats, Justice, Little Man Tate, The View, Arcade fire, New Young Pony Club, The Spinto Band, Peter Bjorn and John, The Cat Empire and many more.

Happy Timothy Whitmore Day!

Furthermore our very first show of the broadcast is on [the now famous since this time last year] Timothy Whitmore Day! Tune in and celebrate the life and wonderfulness that is Timothy Whitmore [and forget about all those V-Day cards you may or may not have recieved].

Amsterdam

Well its now more than a week since we left for ‘The Dam’, and if I remember correctly it was a darn sight sunnier in Holland than it is here in miserable wet Manchester, but hey, Manchester has hills and you can’t have it all.

I won’t blab on too great a deal as I imagine the majority of you are sick to death of my ramblings about… well, sick. You can find the photos from the trip here and the main video from the journey here. Unfortunately there aren’t a great deal of photos from the trip what with me spending most of my battery on documenting the carnage on the way down [and subsequent amensia regarding parts of my camera charger]. Nevertheless there is a whole twenty two and a half minutes of Coach A splendour as a video.

What did we do? Managed to be surprisingly cultured to be honest. We hired bikes, went on a boat trip, went to the Anne Frank museum, went to the Heineken Experience [video link], saw the Red Light district, visited the Sex Museum, drank a reasonable quantity of the local brew, sat in late night bakeries, and indulged in a bit of Dansen bij Jansen. Not bad for two days work.

Big thanks to all the BA Econ people that made it happen: Claudio, Will, Joel, Dan and the rest of you. And thank you to Kate, Sam, Penelope and Emily for putting up with me and my collection of wires in their room for the weekend.

February 2007 Fuse FM Broadcast

So, Fuse FM is back for one more broadcast and Dan and I are back for our last. This is everyone’s last ever chance to listen to The Andrew Jackson show live on Fuse FM.

In a nut shell this is what you need to know…

# Dan and I have bagged the exclusive Wednesday 4-6 afternoon slot. We hope many of you will be at home to listen, what with having no lectures on Wednesday afternoons. So effectively what we’re saying is bugger the sport and spend some time on your bum listening to us!

# The broadcast starts the week beginning the 12th so our first show will be on the 14th February [Timothy Whitmore day!]

# The show will be broadcasting on 103.5 FM this time, NOT 87.9 FM. If you tune into the old frequency you’re likely to get Gaydio on 87.7 which started their RSL license a couple of weeks ago. You can of course always tune in online at www.fusefm.co.uk.

Dan and I have had a think and a chat and we’ve come to the conclusion things were a little too fast paced last broadcast so we’re going to slow things down a bit, keep the features and giveaways but add a bit more of the randomness that I think won me the award.

Furthermore, its going to be double the fun this broadcast regarding your Harry Garne and Andrew Jackson content. Harry and I will be fleeing to a specialist radio slot in true Colin Murray style to start a new show called Anablogue [website]. So if you’re straining at the bit to listen to Harry or I [more likely the former] you can listen to the eclectic affair that we will be presenting on Monday evenings between 8 and 10.

Finally in a sort of mutation of the traditional blog roll here are the shows I’d be listening out for in the next four weeks:

Wilfully Twisted – Wednesdays 18:00 til 20:00 [after The AJ Show!] presented by the fast becoming legendary Harry Garne [and his mate Mike] [facebook link].

Bantasy Land – Sundays 14:00 til 16:00 presented by studio manager Katie Bilbao and resident tall person Woodsy [facebook link].

Katie: “I can confirm that old favourites The Pundown, The Lady Rant, and Woodsy’s Cleaning Tips will be back, plus guest apperances from the clock of justice (casio) and a few other old favourites plus some more new and exciting features. I will also try not to talk so much. And I promise to play good music, unless I go to the toilet when Woodsy might put on toploader. toilet trips will be kept to minimum.

Ian and Lyds – Saturdays 12:00 til 14:00 presented by head of music [the man that makes the play lists] Ian Cushing.

The Lou Lou Show – Thursdays 18:00 til 20:00 presented by Louise Ayling [facebook link].

Pangaea

Late I know, but I finally got around to uploading all those large videos and the photos of what was for me, an excellent night.

I got to Pangaea nice and early on the Saturday to set up the CDJs in the Twisted Folk Tent which was hosted by non-other than Simon Borkin of Tariff Sessions and Pablo’s Finest Hour fame [more on them later]. I have to say Pangaea made much better use of Academy 1 this year. Last year they put all the headline acts like Evil Nine in there, but although it was decked out rather glasto-dance-tent-esque it was just too big and the sound wasn’t great. However this year Academy 1 played host to Carnival Extraordinaire. There was a casino, a console corner – which comprised of a lot of sofas, TVs and some classic old games systems [like the Megadrive], a compare and comedy acts, a tea party area and performing jugglers, unicyclists and when it got a little darker outside – fire poi! [video]. All very good indeed.

I had a quick nip round the main union building to see what it was all like before the masses arrived. I compiled a short selection of clips which you can find here. It was a shame the Solem Bar didn’t open straight away downstairs as it meant I had to trudge all the way back to Academy 1 for my next beer which meant I couldn’t spend more time watching the excellent stuff being put on by the JFSC. I did manage to catch, however, the first act of the night, MUJO [video] . Despite my efforts of putting a reminder in my phone to watch The Big Little Band between 3-4am I still managed to miss the headliners who I watched last year at Pangaea 2. Needless to say I’m sure they were superb and I definitely recommend keeping an eye out for those guys in the future.

Most of my night was spent in the Twisted Folk Tent where I was DJing between bands and which I have to say showcased an enormous amount of talent. I managed to catch a number of the bands including Dr. Butler’s Hat Stand Band, Man With A Lamb aka The Black Velvet Band [video], Buttonhead [video], Pablo’s Finest Hour [video], and Gideon Conn [video]. Man With A Lamb were an amusing upbeat country come crusty bunch; Buttonhead are what I’d probably describe as a slightly more trippy Arcade Fire; Pablo’s Finest Hour are the band version of Tariff Sessions who played on The Andrew Jackson Show back in October [link] and did a storming set; and finally Gideon Conn is the chap who I have now come to realise if the bloke you may or may not have seen at the front of venues sketching bands. I saw him at The Young Knives in the Bier Keller this time last year. You can see some of his stuff at http://www.artboo.com/gideonconnart

In between some of that I did pop out of the tent to wander through Pangaea to find the Moroccan Tea Tent which seemed to have less of the tea and more of the playdough oddly enough. However there was a fantastic chap in there on a guitar with his mate on bongos [video]. Haven’t the foggiest who they were but they were very very good.

After my sets at the Twisted Folk Stage I rejoined a fairly substantial contingent of Claudio, Kate, Teresa, Elle, Klara, Phoebe, Claire and Lorna and went to see the grimey delights of DJ Krust [Full Cycle crew fame] and DJ Bailey [of BBC 1 Extra] in Academy 2 which for that night was christened Charitea. Needless to say it was very filthy and very loud, even louder when you’re taller than everyone else. Nonetheless it was good to see a substantial student drum and bass crowd [video] – many of whom I would imagine still had their ears ringing from the previous night’s goings on with Ape at the Apollo and the 120’000 watt Valve Sound System.

All in all another amazing night from the organisers and I offer a hand of congratulation to all of them. My other hand I offer clenched to the scally that nicked my hoodie – my hoodie for christs sake! Do you not have clothes of your own!

Dan’s 22nd Birthday

Last night saw a troop of geeks and nerds which ascended all swottish proportions. Happy Birthday Dan and thanks to everyone that turned up and made such an effort to be a geek or nerd. The photos are available here and the videos I took on the dance floor of 42s here.

Also of note, it seems Dan is in his spare time the geeky virgin from skins and Ashleigh in hers is a 12 foot tall netball player…

DJing on the Twisted Folk Stage @ Pangaea

This Saturday 27th I’ll be laying down a few beats in between the sets of the bands playing on the Twisted Folk stage [facebook link] at Manchester Uni’s exclusive Pangaea event.

Simon Borkin [past Andrew Jackson Show guest] who is organising the stage says it best:

As part of the Pangaea post exam-extravaganza, the Twisted Folk stage plays host to a dazzling array of acts providing folky flavours and psychedelic sounds to sweep you away…

With headline act The Answering Machine, we can also boast performances from Gideon Conn, Buttonhead, Beepseals, The Petty Thief, Pablo’s Finest Hour, Isobel Hayworth and much more…

Plus award winning Fuse FM DJ Andrew Jackson will be laying on the tunes between the acts…

Nestled behind the Solem Bar, be sure not to miss this hidden gem of a venue…

If you’re already attending Pangaea [facebook link] then I’ll see you there. If you’re not then WHY NOT?

…does this mean I can say I’ve DJ’d a gig with Mary Anne Hobbs?

Wanted!

Who is the person holding the video camera in the background? If you are this person or know them PLEASE GET IN CONTACT. Email me and hopefully we can arrange a way of getting what I am sure is legendary footage of a one off never to be matched again evening.

Don’t know what I’m on about? It was of course the infamous Chestnut Court Rave that took place on the very last day of halls at Oak House in 2005. Check out the pictures and the videos.
